Southern Elevated Road Ludwigshafen officially opened

HEBERGER Group and Implenia deliver major infrastructure project for the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region

Ludwigshafen, July 3, 2026 – The new Hochstraße Süd (South Elevated Road) in Ludwigshafen was officially inaugurated today. Among the guests were Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder, the Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate Gordon Schnieder, and numerous representatives from politics, business, and society. After years of closure and an intensive construction phase, one of the most important transport links between the Palatinate and North Baden is now close to fully reopening to traffic.

The new Hochstraße Süd is a key element of the transport infrastructure in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. The centerpiece of the project is the replacement of the approximately 530‑meter bridge that succeeds the former “Pilzhochstraße” (Mushroom Elevated Road). In addition, the “Weiße Hochstraße” (White Elevated Road) underwent extensive modernization, and the pylon bridge was refurbished. In total, the federal government, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, and the City of Ludwigshafen invested around 150 million euros in this high-performance and safe transport link.

HEBERGER Hoch-, Tief- und Ingenieurbau GmbH (HTI) and Implenia executed this demanding infrastructure project as a strong joint venture. The partners combined their technical expertise, their experience in civil engineering, specialist foundation engineering, and bridge construction, as well as their resources, to successfully complete the project despite complex conditions.

Special recognition goes to the entire project team, which overcame significant challenges throughout the construction period. From managing site logistics in an inner-city environment and carrying out extensive concrete and reinforced concrete works to precisely coordinating the many parties involved, the project required the highest level of professional expertise, flexibility, and teamwork. The dedication of all employees—both on site and within the planning and project teams—was crucial to completing the project on schedule. Our sincere thanks go to the entire project team.

The new bridge is impressive in scale: its construction required approximately 20,500 cubic meters of concrete, 3,100 tonnes of reinforcing steel, and 570 tonnes of prestressing steel. The result is a modern engineering structure covering around 12,600 square meters that will play a key role in the future efficiency of the regional transport network.

“The completion of the ‘Hochstraße Süd’ marks a significant milestone for Ludwigshafen and the entire region. This project demonstrates what can be achieved through trusting cooperation among all stakeholders, strong partnerships, and the commitment of experienced project teams,” states the HEBERGER Group.

The official opening marks the conclusion of one of Ludwigshafen’s most important infrastructure projects in recent years. For the HEBERGER Group, this project once again underscores its expertise in delivering complex engineering structures and highlights its strong ties to the Rhine-Neckar region.
