Modernisation, conversion and extension of the “White House”
An imposing entrance area welcomes the visitor from the narrow street with a round and convex vault above the entrance, executed with special formwork. In stark contrast to this, one sees a sharp-edged version of the recessed corner of the “White House” on Königstraße in Stuttgart.
The office building, located between Königstraße and Schmale Straße in Stuttgart, was built in 1974 by the architect Max Bächer. Over time, the retail space could no longer be rented out and the building became unattractive. After an invited investor competition, the Stuttgart office Lederer, Ragnarsdóttir, Oei was awarded the contract to convert the building. With this project, the architects pursued a clear commitment to the urban space and its quality and worked out the existing axes, squares and edges in a very special design language. Within one year, the modernisation, conversion and expansion, which had an order volume of more than Euro, has been completed.
